Tips for Little Beginners
Beginnings at dance school are a big experience for children – new movements, music, rhythm, and of course... beautiful dance clothes! Proper clothing for ballroom dance training is not just about appearance but also about comfort and technique. Here is an overview of what little dancers who are just starting out should wear – both girls and boys.
Girls – Graceful but Practical
Tops, Leotards and Skirts
For Latin and standard dance training, leotards with short or long sleeves and light dance skirts that freely follow the movement are suitable. It is important that the knees are visible – this allows the trainer to better observe the technique of footwork.
For younger beginners, it is important that they feel comfortable and are not too "dressed up" – simple, elastic clothing is completely sufficient.
Trousers for Standard Dance
Older girls (especially during standard dance training) often choose training trousers that are comfortable and allow free movement. They often combine them with fitted tops or leotards.
Footwear for girls
At the very beginning, ballet shoes or soft dance shoes are enough, but quite quickly it is appropriate to switch to dance shoes with a square (Cuban) heel, which better support proper posture and style of movement. For little beginners, a low heel and quality sole (preferably made of buffed suede) that does not slip but allows easy gliding are ideal.
Boys – Comfortable and Stylish
T-shirt and Trousers
Boys should wear a simple fitted T-shirt (often black or white) and long, elastic trousers that do not restrict movement during training. It is important that the clothing is not too loose – this way the trainer can better see posture and foot movement.
Dance Footwear for Boys
Beginners can start with ballet shoes, but over time it is appropriate to invest in dance shoes or sneakers with a sole made of brushed leather. These shoes are comfortable and non-slip and, at the same time, allow quality work with the floor.
Extra tips for parents and children:
Avoid clothing with sequins, ruffles, or accessories – these are more suitable for performances, not for training.
Hair (especially for girls) should be tightly tied, ideally in a bun – so it does not interfere with dancing.
The child should have a water bottle and a small towel with them.
Training clothes should be kept clean and ready in a special bag – this creates a good habit from the start.
In Conclusion
Proper clothing for dance training helps children feel good, move freely, and learn technique without unnecessary distractions. It is not important to have professional costumes right from the start – the key is comfort, movement, and joy of dancing. If you are not sure what exactly is appropriate, it is always best to consult the trainer – they will recommend the most suitable pieces according to the child’s age, style, and level.
